Home design client project
The brief: to write editorial copy for a four page feature on a client’s new design project.
Part of my role as an editorial assistant with United Media Group in Melbourne, Australia was creating usable copy for editorial pages in each of the company’s magazines. The magazines spanned a variety of topics from home design, pool and outdoor living, weddings, wineries and kitchen and bathroom design.
For this client project, I was tasked with writing up a four page editorial feature for a client to showcase their new design project in the upcoming edition of Sydney Home Design + Living magazine.
As part of my role, I would liaise with clients for each magazine to fill out and submit our company’s questionnaires, which we would then use along with imagery to turn into editorial copy. This client project required a bit of creative thinking, with only a sparsely completed questionnaire to work from. Oftentimes, clients that I would manage for different magazines would submit one-word or incomplete questionnaires for me to turn into a two to sometimes six page feature. In this instance, the project had not been completed prior to the submission of the questionnaire, so the images were obtained from the client just as the magazine was going to print.
As I didn’t have any images to work from, I conducted a bit of background research, looking into the company and the types of work they typically created. From there, I utilised my research and took what I could from the questionnaire to turn it into usable content.
With every client project, it was imperative to write engaging copy that showcased a client’s abilities for the intended audience. Once the feature was finally designed and a round of changes were proofed for a consistent tone of voice and style across the magazine, the editorial copy was approved for use in the Home Design + Living magazine.
